For children’s braces, including braces for teens, we have the technology and experience to help kids and teens through a range of treatment options.

Most parents aren’t aware that children’s braces are just one treatment pathway for teeth straightening. In fact, early interceptive treatment – also known as Phase I treatment – may be what’s required for your child. Interceptive orthodontics is the guidance of teeth eruption and correction of malocclusion (abnormal bite) by early intervention in order to improve future outcomes. This is usually achieved by simple fixed or removable appliances.

The ideal age for a growth and development check is between the ages of 7 and 10 years. That way, if interceptive treatment is required, we can take advantage of the natural growth which occurs during this period. Ultimately, this may help avoid more expensive and expensive braces and surgical treatment in future.

When is the best time to start with Orthodontics for my child?

The best way to know if your child requires early interceptive orthodontic treatment is to book an appointment for a growth and development check. This will allow us to understand whether your child is experiencing:

Jaw misalignment
Overcrowding
Difficulty with chewing or speech
A persistent behavioural habit, such as thumb sucking or tongue thrusting, which is affecting the growth and development of their teeth
Early loss of baby teeth because of decay or trauma
Mouth breathing or snoring
A family history of impacted or missing teeth.

Children’s braces: what are the options?

Actually, your child may not need braces initially. In phase I treatment, a patient may undergo treatment involving expansion, an active retainer, or partial braces. The objective of phase I treatment is to make use of natural growth to develop the jaw to create space for future permanent teeth. We also want to improve the relationship between the upper and lower jaws.

In phase II treatment, we want to position all teeth to make the most of their position and function. This is usually achieved by full braces for anywhere between 12 and 24 months. Depending on your child’s specific condition, the duration of treatment may be shorter or longer.

I can’t recommend Dr Raj and the team at Lillybrook Dental enough! I was 35 weeks pregnant and developed a terrible toothache (the worst timing!), they fit me in quickly and did everything they could to save the tooth, giving me all options and no pressure.
