Minimal sedation dentistry can be administered orally or by inhalation of nitrous oxide – happy gas. In some cases, a combination of both methods may provide the best sedation solution.

Happy gas (also known as nitrous oxide or laughing gas) is an effective form of sedation that allows anxious patients to undergo treatment in a very relaxed and euphoric state. Not only can it instantly ease a patient’s nerves or feelings of panic, but it is a highly successful form of pain management, suppressing senses such as hearing and touch.

Our team of oral health care professionals are qualified and trained to administer happy gas (nitrous oxide) for a wide range of procedures, including fillings, root canal therapy, dental cleans, and more to help you become relaxed and less anxious about your procedure.

Happy gas is inhaled through a mask and it is safe to use on the majority of patients – including both children and the elderly. Once you’ve breathed in the happy gas for a few minutes, it will begin to take effect. You will find yourself in a highly relaxed, sedative state, allowing our dentists to commence the procedure. Although happy gas is a sedative, it’s important to mention that you are in fact not asleep. You will remain conscious throughout the procedure and our dentist is able to converse with you to ensure you are comfortable.

With oral sedation, a relaxant drug is taken ahead of treatment. This lessens apprehension by suppressing brain activity that triggers a fright reaction.

The dosage is determined by your weight and overall health. During the dental procedure, most patients are able to remain responsive to their dentist.

Other Types Of Sedation

Inhalation sedation

Inhalation sedation entails breathing in a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. Nitrous oxide calms you down by stimulating pleasant feelings. It works quickly and the effects tend to soon wear off.

Special breathing masks are available for kids, introducing scents into the odourless happy gas. This can help to make the process less intimidating. While a few patients may react adversely to nitrous oxide, most just get the giggles.

Moderate sedation

Moderate sedation involves injection of an anxiety-countering drug into the blood system via a vein in the arm or hand – IV (intravenous) sedation. It works fast and levels are adjusted according to the type of dental treatment and length of the procedure.

Vital signs such as pulse and oxygen levels are monitored throughout the treatment, and blood pressure is checked before and afterwards.

I can’t recommend Dr Raj and the team at Lillybrook Dental enough! I was 35 weeks pregnant and developed a terrible toothache (the worst timing!), they fit me in quickly and did everything they could to save the tooth, giving me all options and no pressure. I ended up needing a root canal and crown and was very upset and worried about the pain, they reassured me and despite the outcome for my tooth I had a great experience.
