Fissures, crevices, pits or cracks may be part of the natural conformation of the tooth, usually in molars at the back of the mouth. Because the shape of the fissure easily catches food, they can be prone to decay and cavities.

How can fissures be treated?

Lillybrook Dental is happy to advise the treatment for fissures is simple, painless and inexpensive.

Our dentists are skilled in applying a white or clear sealant to the fissures to prevent tooth decay and cavities. Sealants may be recommended for the first molar teeth which appear around 6 years of age. It is also useful to have second molars checked when they break through around 13 years.

The procedure involves:

Cleaning and drying the tooth
Preparing the tooth surface so that the sealant will bond
Painting on the liquid sealant to fill the grooves and pits
Using a strong light to bond and harden the sealant
Checking your bite and polishing off any excess sealant.

An adjunct to fissure sealants is fluoride varnish, which can be applied to the teeth by a dental practitioner. This application, mostly used for young children at high risk of developing cavities needs to be applied 2 to 4 times a year.

What are the benefits and risks of fissure sealants?

Lillybrook Dental children’s dentists find using fissure sealant a sound preventive dentistry measure. After the procedure, it will be easier to brush and maintain the top of the fissure sealed teeth, however care should still be taken to brush the sides around teeth.

We will check the sealant on your regular check-up to see that it is in good condition. Should the sealant fall off or wear down over time, sealant needs to be reapplied, to continue to reduce tooth decay.
