Although you may not be aware of grinding, Lillybrook Dental will notice during your oral exam any excessive wear on the back molars and enamel loss, indicative of bruxism (teeth grinding). If this is the case for you, Lillybrook Dental will discuss options for consideration for splints and night guards. In some instances, we may refer you to your general practitioner for additional support.
Even when sleeping, your teeth may be damaged by grinding, dental fillings can be broken, jaw muscles become tight or painful, you may suffer pain in the face, injured gums and headaches and popping or clicking of the temporomandibular joint, which joins the jawbone to the skull.
We will assess the cause of your of teeth grinding or clenching, or bruxism, and provide treatment options accordingly.
There are a number of approaches to take and we tailor an approach depending on whether the issue is grinding, management of pain caused by the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), or other causes. We will custom fit a night guard made of plastic, to wear during sleep that prevents the teeth from scraping against each other.
Once Lillybrook Dental has serviced your needs for a mouthguard or night guard, it is important to use the device properly and care for it if you are to derive full value from your health investment.
Sensible care of the device includes rinsing after use or brushing with a toothbrush; always carry it in a sturdy, vented container; avoid leaving it in the sun or hot water; and check regularly for wear, replacing when necessary.
